Twinkling Tara!
Tara Sutaria might have had a dream launch with Karan Johar, Tiger Shroff and Ananya Pandey but somehow she is always beenthe mean girl who wanted everything just her way. Of course, her latest
Marjaavaan changed a bit of that image. The rumours around the girl
are however refusing to rest. While her so called love story with Sidharth Malhotra (her Marjaavaan co-star)
might be a thing of the past, the latest deet on her claims some major sparks flying between Tara and Aadar Jain (better known as Kareen Kapoor’s cousin). What is really happening…and ends with…she have for future?
Every man who walked into the theatres to see Student of the Year 2, was only talking about Tara Sutaria. She is one of the most sure-footed actresses to have come into the industry in the last couple of years. It is obvious she knows her worth and is not shy to demand her price. Even before her first film came out, she had Marjaavaan in her kitty. The film might have only made 50 Crs but it sure won hearts with its poignant love story.
Have you already put Marjaavaan behind you?
It won’t ever be completely behind me. I was told that each film takes a little of you, and gives you a different aspect of your personality too. I have learnt so much from my first film, and even now with my second one, I feel new. Not just because I have learnt the sign language but also because I learnt a little about how life could be for a mute person. We do tend to take our blessings for granted, suddenly putting yourself in the shoes of a challenged person, kind of puts things in perspective.
Was there any awkwardness working with Sidharth Malhotra given the rumours about your romance filling the papers?
To begin with the rumours started because we were working together, otherwise there was really nothing they could have talked about. We were working, we are neighbours so people just started speculating. Since we had met much before the rumours got around, we already had a comfortable rapport. Given I am still new around here, I am still adjusting to being written about and spoken about so perhaps, had I not known him prior to the rumours, I might have been a little awkward. But that’s just my supposition. Both of us are professionals and had challenging roles so we needed to concentrate on the work, really!
Although it does get a little annoying when people just put our bizarre stories without any grain of truth in it.
So it is true film romantic films is really unromantic!
(Laughs) absolutely!
How do you approach your characters?
I am pretty methodical in my approach. For someone who is not from the industry, it gets imperative to be prepared for whatever your role needs you to do. I do believe for industry kids there is an option to learn from what their forefathers or fathers did. For us (outsiders) we need to learn on the job or observe others.
Who are your favourites in that case, actresses that inspire you?
You might think I am very old-school but the fact is that I always find Madhubala, Meena Kumari and Nutan fascinating. Their screen presence, beauty, eyes, and expressions are on a different level. Their subtle expressions would speak a thousand words silently. I think our generation misses out on their adaa and nazaaqat. I hope we can bring back those things!
The poise is really lost, perhaps girls are mistaking it for being submissive?
It is mostly everything to do with the kind of cinema that is being made. One cannot act all coy when you are playing a modern Indian woman. But thanks to the variety of cinema that is being made today we have ample
films which are dealing with the old-world charm. For example, the period films that are being made helps gives us a glimpse of that adaa and nazaaqat that I was mentioning earlier.
Could we be expecting something of a period film from you?
In fact, I will be doing quite the opposite. My next film is called Tadap, which is a remake of Rx100, where I will play anything but a coy, demure girl.
Tell us a little something about Tadap.
Tadap is the official remake of RX 100, a Telugu film that released last year. I am paired opposite Ahaan Shetty (Suniel Shetty’s son) We have already shot a few scenes and we will be moving to Mussoorie next. Most of the film will be shot in Mussoorie so I am looking forward to that.
From whatever we know of RX 100, it sounds disturbingly similar to Arjun Reddy aka Kabir Singh…
Well, I really cannot tell you much but be assured that it is nothing like that. The film will leave you moved and dumbstruck all at once!
When you gauge a film during narration, are you often moved by it?
I remember crying during the narration of Marjaavaan. I think part of the reason why I signed the film was because I don’t think I have ever seen a film wherein one has to kill one’s own love! Of course, I was moved to tears, I cry easy as it is! I am very emotional as a person, so I really have to work on myself to stay slightly detached.
When you are down and out, who is the person you seek out?
When you have a twin, you really needn’t go beyond her. Pia is my go-to person when I am low or even when I am delirious with joy. She just completes it for me. Though we don’t look alike as we are fraternal twins, but we are a package deal emotionally.
Why not professionally?
Well, we do work together. We have been singing operas since we were 6 years old. When it comes to music yes, we collaborate, but I don’t think Pia has any interest whatsoever in movies. She is a ballet dancer and instructor, has her own school to teach dance, so has her hands full.
Despite being such a wonderful singer, why haven’t you sung for yourmovies already or cut an album?
I am just two films old here in Bollywood, if I could I would have put it as a clause that I need to sing for my songs (laughs), but I don’t think that would have been taken well. As of now I am only finding my footing. I would love to try my hands at playback or even cut an album, but that needs full focus too. I am not someone who can do a haphazard attempt at things, I dive headlong. So, if I ever turn to music it will be the same.
The fame and stardom are still relatively new for you, how do manage that front?
We are thankful and grateful, but I don’t think my family and I really look into it too closely. For me it is a high that I am doing something that I enjoy doing and that’s always been enough.
But didn’t you ever feel ill prepared to juggle this new life as a hindi film actress?
Being a performer all my life, I had a fair idea about how it would be when you turn into a public figure over night. But of course, there are moments when I still reel from the aftermath of it. I am a very private person so I have never really felt very comfortable with personal comments about me being plastered all over the Daily’s. My family really helps me during those times. They usually just laugh it off, but I know somewhere they worry. Perhaps that’s the only think that made me feel ill-prepared, other than that I am in my happy place!
There were rumours about this happy place having a co-inhabited by a certain Mr Aadar Jain!
He is just a very close friend of mine, we bonded over food, friends and films.
